SHARK
February 7th, 2006

This is a replica of an ancient Carcharocles Mecalodon shark jaw on display at Plaza de La Paz in Laguna Niguel. The jaw and other fossils including a Mixacetex Baleen Whale skull were discovered during the construction of the plaza. The skull is only the second example of the species known. The site of the plaza was a deep ocean basin over 10 million years ago. The plaza is a shopping center.

I didn’t realise whales had teeth that big. I thought they ate plankton. Nice shot.

Yes, bob this is a shark skull. I copied the wrong name, but there is also a Mixacetex Baleen Whale skull on display at the plaza. I may take a picture of that as well. Thanks.

Phenomenal ! Wish I can see it myself. This is interesting, ’cause if it is only the second example of the species known, shouldn’t it be better exposed in a museum.. ??…just a thought
