This question has come up recently in Seattle with a lot of discussion, the gist of which has been this legal advice:
If you are on public property, such as a city sidewalk, you have every legal right to photograph whatever is in view and cannot be prosecuted for it (although if you are making a habit of making shot in front of federal buildings etc, you are going to catch grief). If you are on private property, it’s best to abide by any requests made of you.
So what is this place that they asked you to stop?
