New Favorite!!!

Kean Coffee in Newport Beach has really good espresso but they only have one location.  I think the fact that they only have one location and have great coffee makes this place (unlike another larger but struggling coffee chain) such a gem.

Festival of Whales

festofwhales1.jpg

Looks like it’s time for whale watching! You can go whale watching from Dana Point Harbor but most of all you can go to Jon’s Fish Market for some great fish and chips.

Fire Hazzard

fire_hazzard1.jpg

I wonder if this would be considered a Fire Hazzard? This shot was taken on the outdoor patio of Habana located at The Lab in Costa Mesa. I have been visiting The Lab frequently lately.

Nice and Shiny

I found this crystal artwork in Costa Mesa at The Lab. If you’ve browsed my older posts you remember The Lab from these posts:

The Lab “Anti Mall”

Barrel Fountain

Orange Buddah

Whenever I go to The Lab I usually eat at Habana a great Cuban Restaurant.

A good Baguette

020708.jpg

In my quest to find a good baguette outside of France I have stumbled on a few great places to eat. Lee’s Sadnwiches in Lake Forest is one of them. Their baguettes come pretty close to the baguettes I’ve tried in Paris, they are cheap ($1) and baked fresh every 30 minutes.

texture - crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside
taste - sweet but not very sweet and a hint of salt
size and apperance - very close to the baguettes in France. Most American made baguettes look fatter and much more round.
aroma -like wheat and cream

The texture and taste seem to last pretty long but not like the baguettes in France.

Other great baguettes:

Champagne Bakery (my favorite)

texture - crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside
taste - sweet but not very sweet and a hint of salt Tastes very close to a French made baguette.
size and apperance - very close to the baguettes in France.
aroma - like fruit and wheat. Apricot or a pear???

This baguettes taste and texture last longer than the one from Lee’s.

Henry’s

texture - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Although, not very consistent it is only soft in the middle portion of the baguette.
taste - sweet and salty
size and apperance - fat and round
aroma -

loses taste after a few hours

Gelsons Market

texture - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
taste - sweet and lightly salty
size and apperance - very fat and round
aroma

loses taste after a few hours

I am sure there are more great baguettes in Orange County but I think Champagne and Lee’s are the best.

Dinner

bonsai.jpg

How many versions of the California Roll are there in the World? This version is a Bonsai Roll.

The Bonsai Roll has the typical California Roll ingredients of crab meat, avocado and cucumber. The addition is a shrimp tempura.

This was taken at Champagne French Cafe. The cafe is located in Costa Mesa at South Coast Plaza by the Tiffany’s entrance. They have great baguettes!!!! Yum!

Finally!!

After a long hard search I finally found a baguette that is worthy of posting. It is from Henry’s and it tastes almost as good as a baguette from France!
